"Shrek" is coming back. Eddie Murphy announced the start of filming and announced a spinoff about Donkey
The sequel to the legendary Shrek 5 franchise may be released next year. Actor Eddie Murphy, who voiced the Donkey in the original version, announced that he had started working on a new part of the cartoon series. However, he pleased Shrek fans with one more piece of news - he hinted at the upcoming filming of a spinoff about the Donkey himself.
So far, DreamWorks Animation has not commented on anything, although after the success of the second part, CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg said that the story of the green ogre was planned to be told in five parts since the franchise's debut. According to Collider, Eddie Murphy announced the project in June this year, and the entire movie will most likely be released in 2025.
"We started making Shrek 5 months ago. I did it, I recorded the first act, and we'll be doing it this year, we'll finish it. Shrek is coming out and Donkey will have his own cartoon. We're going to do The Donkey too. So we'll do Shrek and Donkey," the actor said.
Murphy explained that the cartoons will be released one by one: first, the team will work on the new Shrek and show it on the screens, and then they will start working on Donkey.
The actor has been the constant voice of the Donkey since the first part of the franchise. Earlier, Illumination CEO Christopher Meledandri expressed his desire to bring back the original voices of Mike Myers as Shrek and Cameron Diaz as Fiona.
"We expect the cast to return," he said last April.
23 years have passed since the premiere of the first part, and 14 years since the last one, the fourth part. The six cartoons, including spinoffs, have grossed more than $1.6 billion at the box office.
"The fans were able to see Puss in Boots, which became a more detailed disclosure of the story of Shrek's friend Cat, after the release of the 4th part of the main series of cartoons. It is known that it was only after the successful screening of the second part of Puss in Boots: The Last Wish that it was announced that fans would see the fifth part of Shrek, as the creators had previously claimed that the last, fourth, part should be stopped.
At the end of 2022, Spanish actor Antonio Banderas, who voiced the cheeky Puss in Boots in the giant franchise, has already hinted at the return of Shrek.
"I spent 20 years with this cat. I first became Puss in Boots when I was working on Broadway. I've done five cartoons and will most likely do another one. Most likely, Shrek is coming back," he said.
