The long-awaited sequel to the Shrek franchise has been postponed for six months. Viewers were expecting the fifth installment to premiere in the summer of 2026, but Universal Pictures and DreamWorks Animation postponed the release of the animation until the end of the year.

The reason for this decision was not given, Deadline writes. Earlier, it was stated that the sequel would be timed to coincide with the 25th anniversary of the first part, which was released on November 1, 2001, and launched one of the favorite animated stories of several generations.

The new premiere date is set for Wednesday, December 23, 2026. At the same time, the studio announced that it was postponing Illumination's Minions 3 from June 30, 2027, to the previous date of July 2026.

Perhaps this was the reason why Shrek 5 was postponed. The two expected premieres could have "stolen" each other's success.

As a reminder, fans had to wait 15 years for the fifth part of Shrek, since the final, fourth film, which logically ended the story of the ogre and his family, was released in 2010. However, in 2020, the studio started talking about another film.

It's already known that Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, and Cameron Diaz will return to voice Shrek, Donkey, and Fiona, respectively. The four previous films have grossed more than $2.9 billion worldwide, and have spawned various series, amateur videos and games in the Shrek universe.

The story tells of a reclusive ogre who lived in a house in a swamp and did not realize his loneliness until he met his faithful friends, Donkey and Puss in Boots, and love in the form of a cursed princess.

The second and third parts tell how the newly married couple were accepted in the kingdom, and the final film teaches the protagonist to appreciate his family and not to grieve for the lost peace.
