Shark tank, smart windows, and even an operating room: what billionaires' bunkers look like in case of an apocalypse. Photo.
Nowadays, wealthy people have become more concerned about their safety than ever before, because in addition to intruders and murderers, other threats to humanity have emerged, such as extreme weather conditions, terrorist attacks, and unpredictable apocalyptic events. Al Corby, the founder of an armored space company, noted that the requirements for bunkers of modern billionaires have changed significantly. Attention is focused on entertainment.
According to the expert, some premium protected facilities resemble full-fledged fortresses, CNN reports. The most expensive shelters are equipped with special protective structures, hidden rooms, aquariums with sharks, bowling alleys, and operating rooms.
Al Corby worked on the protection of a 27-storey private building in Mumbai owned by Indian businessman Mukesh Ambani, whose son recently celebrated the luxurious "wedding of the year." The man noted that the residential development has become an extremely safe place, as it has explosion-proof doors, heavy-duty windows and biometric sensors for entry. The expert called the biggest feature of the house a 9-meter moat with water, which has a special coating that can be set on fire to create a protective ring of fire if necessary.
The owner of the company said that 50 years ago, wealthy people created bunkers that looked like the most expensive hotels, but today's billionaires want much more. Graham Harris, the founder of one of the world's leading design studios, noted that the owners of large fortunes prefer to create a completely secure room inside their homes so as not to waste time moving to the dungeon.
"We did a house in Highgate (an upscale neighborhood in north London) where the cinema was actually a safe room with its own separate filtered air supply, a secure door, a kitchenette, and a fully stocked area that could feed a family for a week," he said.
Secret rooms are especially popular among the rich. In one of the mansions, a large rotating fireplace was created to serve as the entrance to a hidden shooting range. In another room, the back wall of a telephone booth turned into a special slide that led to a room with flight simulators and a shark tank when the correct code was entered.
Another feature of the millionaires' behavior that Al Corby noticed was the paranoid fear of a threat to their health. Because of this, some bunker rooms are equipped like the best operating rooms. Such rooms contain decontamination chambers, cabinets with personal protective equipment and giant first aid kits that will help to survive a long period of isolation.
