Russian tourists detained in Phuket for gambling, banned in Thailand in 1935: they face fines and imprisonment

On January 22, a group of Russians was detained in the popular Thai resort of Phuket. According to local police, an illegal gambling club for foreigners was operating in an elite building.

During the search, five players were caught red-handed, four of whom were Russian citizens. This was reported by the Bangkok Post.

The Russians were accused of playing poker and using chips as a payment currency, the amount of which was about 370 thousand hryvnias.

Another compatriot of the detainees arrived at the villa with hookah tobacco but did not have time to sit down at the gambling table. Later, he confessed to the distribution of prohibited substances, and the others also pleaded guilty.

Any form of gambling, as well as tobacco for hookahs and e-cigarettes, has been banned in Thailand since 1935. Because of this, tourists from Russia face a year in prison and a fine of more than 10 thousand hryvnias.
