Russia may sign an arms exchange agreement with Sudan: ISW reveals details
The aggressor country Russia is looking for new partners for cooperation in the defense sector, which would provide components or weapons for warfare. As part of these efforts, the Kremlin may sign an agreement with the Sudanese armed forces.
It provides for the exchange of weapons for the Russian logistics center in Port Sudan in the Red Sea. This was reported by the Institute for the Study of War (ISW).
The other day, Assistant Commander-in-Chief of the Sudanese forces, Yasir Al-Attah, said that their delegation would soon travel to Russia to sign the relevant contracts.
He characterized the planned Russian hub on the Red Sea coast as "not exactly a military base." According to media reports, the parties agreed to establish a Russian Navy base in Sudan back in 2020, but postponed it indefinitely due to the political crisis in the country and the local government's inability to ratify the agreement with the Kremlin.
However, ISW emphasized that just last month, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister and Special Representative of the Russian President in Africa and the Middle East Mikhail Bogdanov met with Sudanese Armed Forces leader Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and a number of other officials. This is part of his two-day visit to the country on April 28 and 29.
"Russia may be switching sides in the Sudanese civil war to support its armed forces in their quest to acquire a naval base on the Red Sea. Russian support for the Sudanese forces will greatly benefit Iran by harmonizing their bilateral policies and strategies in the region," the analysts said.
Earlier, the Defense Intelligence of Ukraine warned that Russia was preparing provocations against Ukraine related to the illegal trafficking of Western weapons in Africa. The Kremlin planned to accuse Ukrainian special forces of allegedly using US weapons in the fighting in Sudan, and to use fabricated photos of "trophies" captured by Wagner's men as evidence.
As reported by OBOZ.UA, Iran continues to supply Russia with various weapons for the war against Ukraine. Recently, Iranian Qaem-5 guided bombs were spotted on the battlefield.
