Roboticist who predicted the advent of ChatGPT warns humanity of a "digital catastrophe"
Despite all the excitement that can be observed now, the artificial intelligence industry is facing a severe crisis in the near future. It is likely to have catastrophic consequences for the digital industry.
This was stated by Rodney Brooks, former director of the MIT Artificial Intelligence and Computer Science Laboratories, roboticist and co-founder of iRobot. He has long been considered an expert in the field of AI and even predicted the emergence of ChatGPT by OpenAI.
Brooks believes that the near future of AI does not look too bright and the industry is facing a harsh reality check.
Recently, he released his annual Predictions Scorecard report, which focuses on the tech sector. Writing about the AI industry, the scientist noted that despite the unprecedented level of success, the industry is currently "following the hype cycle we have seen over and over again in the more than 60-year history of AI."
According to him, the industry is facing many years of stagnation in the near future, which, however, may end with the next huge breakthrough. At the same time, this difficult period of calm could lead to a catastrophic fall in the digital industry.
"We may be in for another winter of artificial intelligence, or perhaps even a full-blown technological winter, just around the corner. And it will be cold," the researcher emphasized.
This is not the first time Brooks has made predictions about the development of the digital industry. Back in 2018, he predicted that a major breakthrough in AI would occur somewhere between 2023 and 2027. It was in 2023 that a significant breakthrough occurred with large language models such as ChatGPT by OpenAI, which led almost all tech giants to seek to capitalize on this trend by creating their own smart chatbots.
Brooks also noted that he does not believe that the AI industry is close to creating a system that is as smart as a human. He believes that such a breakthrough will not happen until 2048.
"It's much harder than most people realize. Many people think we are already there, but I say we are not there at all," Brooks said.
At the same time, he emphasizes that he does not consider the AI industry to be doomed, but such ambitious technological achievements require a lot of time and money.
