Rebellion against Čeferin: World Cup winner resigns from UEFA

Boban speaks out against Čeferin

The legendary Croatian striker Zvonimir Boban has left the European Football Union (UEFA), where he was the head of the football department. The 1998 FIFA World Cup bronze medalist took this step in protest against UEFA President Alexander Čeferin's intentions to amend the organization's statutes and "zero out" his terms.

Boban wrote about this in an open letter published by Jutarnij List. The former AC Milan footballer, with whom he won the Champions League, criticized Ceferin for his inconsistency and desire to actually usurp power in UEFA.

"Paradoxically, it was Čeferin who proposed and launched a package of reforms in 2017 that were supposed to protect UEFA and European football from the 'bad governance' that was the result of the old corrupt system. The two main points were that neither the president nor the members of the executive committee could run for office more than three times. His rejection of these values and changes is difficult to understand, he will no doubt continue to develop this idea, which I consider fatal," Boban emphasized.

It should be noted that Čeferin was elected president of UEFA in September 2016 and re-elected to this position in February 2019. The Slovenian functionary wants to lift the limit on the number of years during which one can lead the organization, which caused a split in UEFA.
