Unique miniature penguins have been spotted near the Ukrainian Antarctic station "Akademik Vernadsky." We are talking about a rare species – Adelie.

Usually, thousands of sub-Antarctic penguins crowd around "Vernadsky." But to see more miniature beauties with white-blue eyes here is a rarity, Ukrainian polar explorers wrote on the National Antarctic Research Center's Facebook page.

According to Ukrainian researchers, every year they observe several thousand sub-Antarctic penguins on Galindez Island, where the station is located. Last year, there were a record 7,000 of them near "Vernadsky." The polar explorers say that this species is easily recognizable by its red beak and white stripes on the temples.

However, Adelie penguins are not often seen in the vicinity of the Ukrainian polar station. "Representatives of this species mostly nest on other islands in our area, and come to Galindez to visit. But several pairs can nest here as well. For example, last year two pairs made nests, but only one had a baby," the polar explorers said.

This year, two pairs of Adelie have already been spotted on Galindez Island. So far, our biologists have recorded active nest construction in one of them. "We hope that this year we will be able to show you the little adelies from Galindez," the Ukrainian researchers emphasized.
