Ranking of "hidden gems" in Europe published

Sometimes, when choosing a country for your next trip to Europe, you want to take a break from the crowds of tourists, city noise, and tourist locations. Most travelers avoid such places because they consider them not as interesting as the main travel centers.

However, such "hidden gems" are the best choice for people who want to get to know the country, its culture and flavor as deeply as possible. Or just to relax in a more or less tranquil environment. That's why European Best Destinations has published an annual ranking of European "secret" cities.

1. Villajoyosa, Spain

This small city on the Mediterranean coast has a comfortable microclimate and pleasant air temperature throughout the year. It is special for its colorful houses.

2. Ares del Maestrat, Spain

Halfway between Barcelona and Valencia, there is another gem: Ares del Maestrat. Due to the fact that the city is located on a rocky hill, it offers incredible scenery. In particular, you can visit the Mola Castle and the watchtower.

3. Primošten, Croatia

It is located just half an hour by car from Šibenik Airport. The city is famous for its sunny beach vacations, such as the longest beach Mala Raduča with lots of bars, restaurants and various water activities.

4. Bokod, Hungary

The village on Lake Bokod is located just an hour's drive from Budapest. It is a calm and hospitable place that is definitely worth a visit. However, you should be careful as many of the houses are privately owned.

5. Naantali, Finland

This city is ideal for Moomin fans as it is home to Muumimaailma, a theme park based on the works of Tove Jansson.

6. Bour, Faroe Islands

Bour has only 75 inhabitants, so this village is the best option for complete seclusion. It has unique views of the sea and the impressive Thindholmur, an incredibly majestic rock.

7. Blavand, Denmark

Blavand was one of the most protected places in the whole of Denmark during World War II. Because of this, it has bunkers that overlook the beaches. Nowadays, local authorities have tried to fit it into modern landscapes by decorating it with statues of horses.

8. Ulm, Germany

This city is unique for its red roofs and colorful historic buildings, such as the town hall and the chapel of St. Nicholas, which dates back to the 13th century. In particular, it is located almost at the source of the Danube River, which flows through Ukraine to the Black Sea.

9. Aljezur, Portugal

Recently, various cities in Portugal have been included in the rankings of the best settlements, and Aljezur in the south of the country is no exception. The municipality itself is a vast territory with protected areas and has the best beaches for recreation.

10. Dartlo, Georgia

Georgia is one of the least visited countries in Europe, so tourists are not so common. Among the green hills and mountains of Dartlo are historical houses, clan defense towers and religious buildings. Due to its historicity, the city has a "grounded" appearance and exudes tranquility.
