Polar explorers showed photos of seals born near the "Akademik Vernadsky" station and revealed the secret of how to distinguish them

This year, 6 Weddell seals have been born near the Ukrainian Antarctic station "Akademik Vernadsky." The polar explorers showed the photos and reported that among the cubs there are four boys and two girls, who are distinguished by their color.

Svitozar Davydenko, a biologist of the 29th UAE, wrote on the Facebook page of the National Antarctic Research Center that all the seals are feeling well and growing actively. Ukrainian researchers monitor the animals' condition during hiking trips or with the help of a drone.

And this year's first-born SeaBaby, whose name was chosen by the entire network, and his mother decided to settle closer to the Ukrainian station. They chose a place on the ice in the strait between Winter Island, where the seal was born, and Galindez Island, where the "Akademik Vernadsky" is located. Now you can watch the sea baby right from the station's window.

According to the polar explorers, this particular spot on the ice has a large crack and access to open water. So the female is already leaving SeaBaby to get some goodies from the ocean. The researchers note that the seal has grown significantly, has become more independent, and will soon learn to swim.

Sometimes SeaBaby and his mother walk to Winter Island, where there are three other females with pups. Ukrainian polar explorers say that one family of seals is located on the Three Little Pigs Islands, and another one is behind Grotto Island.

Interestingly, before giving birth, the females changed their location from time to time. In particular, several of them constantly moved between Winter and the Three Little Pigs, as if choosing the best "maternity hospital," scientists joke.

The polar explorers posted photos of the newborn pups on Facebook. And commenters immediately began asking how the researchers distinguish between the little seals because they all look alike.

"Seals, like whales' tails, have their own unique colors. Scientists use them to distinguish them and create a photo catalog of all seals," the polar explorers replied.
