Played 48 roles in one movie: the Estonian got into the Guinness Book of Records, having filmed a unique comedy, which is delighted by critics
Estonian actor Martin Sander has entered his name into the Guinness Book of World Records by playing 48 different roles in one movie. The actor directed the movie Dr. Sander's Sleep Cure, which was released this year.
According to the organization's official website, Sander has a degree in music and theater, and he has also appeared as a TV presenter on several occasions, including the Estonian version of Dancing with the Stars and the show The Mask. The filmmaker admitted that becoming a record holder was one of his biggest ambitions in life. In the future, he dreams of winning an Oscar and a Nobel Prize.
In his new movie Dr. Sander's Sleep Cure, the star did not intend to take on so many roles. In fact, the Estonian believed that 16 characters would be more than enough to claim the title, as he was convinced that the existing record would most likely be the eight characters portrayed by British acting legend Alec Guinness in the black comedy crime film Kind Hearts and Crowns (1949).
However, after doing a little research, he discovered that the mark to beat is much higher. Indian actor Johnson George played 45 cameo roles in the 2018 sci-fi movie "Aranu Njan." After learning this, Sander had to rethink his script to find a way to significantly increase the number of roles.
Most of the scenes in "Dr. Sander's Sleep Cure" take place in the world of dreams and nightmares. The director, who has been suffering from insomnia all his life, tried to bring his experience to the screen.
According to the IMDb platform, the film tells the story of the main character who suffers from insomnia. He turns to "Dr. Sander's Sleep Cure" tapes for help, becoming the unwitting star of his own nightmares, traveling through bizarre and painful dream scenes full of black humor. Critics gave the film 6 out of 10 points, sharing their impressions on the website:
- "I have to say that I'm very positive about this movie now after seeing it at the domestic premiere. I went into it with mixed feelings, but the bizarre episodic story drew me in pretty quickly. The movie has a lot of beautiful landscapes and an interesting color scheme that changes from nightmare to nightmare."
- "A man (one of the many roles played by the director and screenwriter Mart Sander) can't sleep and then he plays a strange tape that is supposed to make the listener sleepy. To be honest, I really wanted to sleep while listening to the hypnotic, purring voice (again, Sander's)."
- "Such a beautiful and original movie. From the very beginning, it fascinated me with its beautifully shot scenes, original quirky artifacts, and brilliantly acted roles. The director Martin Sander appears in the movie forty-eight times in different roles. I loved the stylistic uniqueness that Martin brought to the film."
- "The movie shows the genetics of a horror anthology, and you feel a kind of build-up of anxiety through the frame-by-frame narrative. In fact, the whole team did a great job."
