Even things with the worst reputation usually deserve a second chance. This is certainly the story of a city in Brazil that earned the title of one of the most dangerous in the world and has now become a tourist magnet in the middle of the Amazonian forest.

According to the Express, it is the city of Manaus. It was once famous for its high crime rate, so travelers tried to avoid it. However, over time, its interesting architecture and rich history have begun to arouse interest. And a direct flight from Lisbon, operated by TAP Air Portugal since November 2024, has made traveling to Manaus more accessible.

Manaus is the capital of Amazonas, the largest state in Brazil. Despite its remote location in the heart of the Amazon forest, it is a bustling economic and tourist center.

Historically, Manaus was of great importance, especially during the rubber boom of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Today, Manaus is a center for industries such as chemicals, mobile phone components, and oil refining.

However, its image as a dangerous city has taken hold, largely due to its high homicide rate. By the end of 2022, the city was ranked 21st in the world in terms of such serious crime.

Tabloid reports in 2014 added fuel to the fire. Back then, Brazil was hosting the FIFA World Cup, and several games were taking place at the Arena Amazonas in Manaus. The press then described the city as full of risk.

Well, such locations still attract thrill-seeking tourists. Moreover, with the right trip planning, Manaus can offer its guests incredible natural wonders and impressive cultural attractions.

One of the most fascinating places in Manaus is Encontro das Águas (translated from Portuguese as "Meeting of Waters"). At this point, the Rio Negro and Rio Solimões rivers merge, but their waters do not mix immediately. The contrast between the darker waters of the Rio Negro and the lighter, sediment-laden waters of the Solimões creates an extraordinary visual spectacle.

Another attraction in Manaus is the Teatro Amazonas, an exquisite opera house built during the rubber boom. Erected between 1884 and 1896, the opera house is a symbol of the city's once thriving cultural life with its stunning architecture, Italian chandeliers, and marble decoration. Today, it hosts the Amazonas Philharmonic Orchestra and the Amazonas de Opera Festival, which attracts classical music lovers from all over the world.

Despite its reputation, Manaus is not a war zone, as some might imagine. However, it is important to be cautious, especially in certain areas. After all, there are such danger spots in many cities around the world.

Despite its mixed fame, the city remains a popular base for exploring the Amazon rainforest. And many reputable tour operators offer carefully curated itineraries that guarantee safety and provide access to the city's unique charm. With its rich history, cultural heritage and natural beauty, Manaus defies negative expectations.
