The top 10 scariest movies in history are named

The American entertainment magazine Variety has named the scariest movies in history. Horror fans love to watch them over and over again because each of the films is great. Interestingly, most of them were made in the XX century, i.e. before 2001. None of those made after 2020s were included.

The publication has collected 100 of the best horror films in history, but OBOZ.UA will tell you about the top ten. All of them will help to create the Halloween atmosphere shortly before the holiday.

"In compiling a list of the genre’s highest achievements, we considered it all, from highbrow to lo-fi, pure schlock to Hitchcock (whose "Psycho" topped our "Greatest Films" list, but not this one), reaching back to the advent of cinema. Well, maybe not quite the beginning," Variety commented.

10. Carrie (1976)

Carrie is a cult horror film based on the novel of the same name by Stephen King. The plot centers on a shy high school student, Carrie White, who discovers telekinetic abilities due to the constant bullying of her classmates and her tyrannical mother. Her powers become uncontrollable after a cruel prank during the school prom.

9. Salò, or the 120 Days of Sodom (1975)

The story takes place during the Second World War in Italy, where a group of fascists kidnaps young people and subjects them to brutal torture and humiliation. Due to its explicit scenes, the movie caused a huge scandal not only in Italy but throughout Europe.

This movie has become a classic of the horror genre. It tells the story of a young scientist, Henry Frankenstein, who dreams of creating life from dead bodies. He brings his creation to life, but the result is not what he expected. The monster, which at first does not understand its nature, becomes a victim of fear and misunderstanding on the part of people.

Audition is a Japanese psychological thriller about a widower named Shigeharu who, after a long time of loneliness, decides to find a new wife. His friend organizes a fake "audition" where a woman is selected. Shigeharu is fascinated by the quiet and mysterious Asami, but her innocent appearance hides a terrible and dangerous truth.

6. Night of the Living Dead (1968)

Night of the Living Dead is the first zombie film. The plot centers on a group of people who hide in a remote house, trying to survive the invasion of the living dead rising from their graves. Chaos, panic, and mutual distrust within the group become no less of a threat than the zombies outside the walls.

The film tells the story of young Rosemary Woodhouse, who moves with her husband to a new apartment in New York. The film is famous for its unexpected denouement and the legendary shower scene, which has become one of the most famous in the history of cinema.
