No time to delay: what you need to do in the garden by the end of August
August is a busy month for gardeners and vegetable growers. It's time to reap the rewards of hard work. It is important not only to dig up the potato harvest in time, but also to prepare cellars, collect seeds of certain fruits, and prune plants.
Therefore, in the last month of summer, there is no less work in the beds than in July or June. OBOZ.UA tells you what you should do in the garden in August.
Preparing cellars and pantries
The room where the crop will be stored should be cool and dry. You should disinfect the cellar beforehand. If you do not want to use harsh chemicals, you can prepare a simple solution of 20 ml of vinegar per 1 liter of water. The walls and ceiling should be whitewashed to reduce the risk of mold.
Harvesting onions and garlic
If you haven't yet harvested onions and garlic, you should hurry up and finish this work before the end of summer. The rainy season can ruin the harvest. Moisture will prevent the garlic and onions from drying well before storage, and without high-quality drying, you shouldn't even dream of long-term storage.
Harvesting seeds
It's time to think about the next season. Tomato seeds should be collected from ripe but not overripe fruits. Experienced gardeners advise taking those tomatoes that grew on the lower branches of the bushes.
Preventive measures
Increased humidity and lower temperatures promote the growth of fungi and the development of bacteria on plants. In August, it is especially important to monitor the condition of the garden to spray in time.
Caring for strawberries
At the end of August, gardeners advise fertilizing strawberries. You will need potash and phosphorus fertilizers. And closer to the beginning of autumn, the garden bed should be additionally mulched so that the bushes can better survive the winter and give a generous harvest next year.
Compost pit
In August, it is worth laying a compost pit, because after harvesting the garden, there is a lot of material that will come in handy: tops, weeds, grass clippings, stems from the garden, and dead wood. All of this needs to be diluted with fallen leaves, ash, and soil.
Taking care of trees
August watering will promote better fruiting and prepare the trees for winter. Mature trees should be watered with enough water to penetrate 1-1.5 meters into the ground. If there are too many fruits on the trees, it is better to support the branches so that they do not break.
Caring for shrubs and bushes
In late summer, shrubs such as raspberries, gooseberries, and currants require special attention. After the fruiting period is over, the plants need nutrients.
