Nissan is working on a powerful sports car: first details are known
More than a decade has passed since Nissan unveiled the IDx retro concept, hinting at a third sports car alongside the 370Z and GT-R. Finally, there is preliminary information about the launch of the new model. The company has announced several times that the Silvia sports car will be restored, but now it's official – Silvia is coming back.
The Australian magazine Drive has confirmed that the sports car has officially been put into production. The details were reported by Motor1.
Nissan's vice president of global product strategy, Ivan Espinoza, shared the good news that the process has begun, which is mainly about initial planning and early development. Nissan should present a sports car with an electrified powertrain by the end of the decade.
Nissan wants the revived Silvia to meet emission standards in as many countries as possible, which will allow it to increase production. Even though sports cars are a niche market and development from scratch is expensive, Nissan will not join forces with another automaker to speed up the process. Instead of going the route of the Z4/Supra, GR86/BRZ, or Miata/124 Spider, the new Silvia will be the result of a Nissan-only development.
Espinoza is confident that the company can engage in the engineering process on its own but admits that the project requires a serious level of investment.
The fact is that sports cars are not selling so well. Nissan replaced the 370Z with the Z, and it's not even a brand-new car. It's understandable why the company wouldn't want to invest a lot of money in what will eventually become a niche product when it already has one (the Z) and is working on another (the GT-R).
The launch of a third sports car adds another layer of complexity at a challenging time for Nissan, given the need to electrify its lineup. We can only hope that Nissan will succeed, given the cult of the Silvia and the shortage of affordable sports cars.
