A slow cooker is a convenient and multifunctional appliance that simplifies cooking. However, as with any appliance, there are certain rules for its use. Some foods or dishes are strictly not recommended for cooking in a slow cooker, as this can affect the quality of the food and its safety.

The main rule is to avoid frozen foods. One of the most common mistakes is to cook frozen meat, vegetables, or ready-to-eat frozen meals in a slow cooker. The reasons for this are as follows:

1. Unsafe temperature. Frozen foods take a long time to defrost completely and start cooking. During this period, the food may be in a temperature range favorable for bacterial growth.

2. Disruption of texture and flavor. Frozen ingredients can lose their flavor and texture during prolonged heating, which can ruin the dish.

Always defrost food in one of the following ways before cooking in the slow cooker:

  • In cold water, if you need to do it faster.
  • In the microwave if you have limited time.

Exceptions to the rule

The only things you can put in the slow cooker frozen are ready-to-cook foods that are labeled as suitable for this method. For example, some semi-finished products or special frozen meals.
