Nagelsmann reacts to referee's decision not to award Germany with penalty after Cucurella's handball. Video

The head coach of the German national team has commented frankly on the incident

Germany's head coach Julian Nagelsmann was dissatisfied with the referee's work in the quarterfinals of Euro 2024 in the match against Spain (1-2). Jamal Musiala hit the hand of the Spaniard Marc Cucurella, who was in the penalty area, in the 106th minute of the match with the score 1:1.

The match's head referee, Anthony Taylor, and his VAR assistants did not see any violation of the rules.

"I don't want to talk too much about it [the handball - ed.], but it would be nice if they assessed the intent. For example, if someone hits the arm, they will never recieve penalty for that, but when the ball is clearly going into the goal and hits someone's arm, you can't talk about intent," ESPN quoted Nagelsmann as saying.

The coach believes that in such complex cases, it is necessary for artificial intelligence (AI) to make decisions.

"You have to see where the punch is aimed. We have 50 robots that bring us coffee, so there must be AI that calculates the hits, where they are directed. It is quite simple. We do need to assess where the kick is going, but that's not the only reason we lost the game," Nagelsmann said.

Nagelsmann congratulated Spain on the victory but was disappointed with the result given the huge effort that was expended.

"The whole game was too open, and then in the second half we reacted well with our lineup and got into the game better. And after the 60th minute, we were clearly the best team with many chances, scoring a deserved goal. With the exception of the first five minutes of the second half of extra time, we played well," the coach added.

Despite the elimination from the tournament, the coach positively assessed the preparations for Euro 2024 and expressed hope that his team would be supported by the fans.

"I think that the fact that the national team was previously criticized for not wanting to win, for not showing enough will to win, was not the case today. The players gave their all on the field," Nagelsman said.
