An extremely rare coin with a missing mint mark was sold at an auction in the United States for $500,000. There are only 2 such coins known in the world, and the whereabouts of this one have remained a mystery for decades.

This was reported by The Independent, citing Ian Russell, president of the GreatCollections auction house. He noted that the auction was held online, and the final price of the coin was $506,250.

We are talking about A1975, a 10-cent coin with the image of President Franklin D. Roosevelt on the obverse. It was minted by the U.S. Mint in San Francisco in 1975 but lacks the San Francisco Mint's "S" mark.

Only two such coins are known to exist, but their location has remained a mystery since the late 1970s. The second was sold at auction in 2019 for $456 thousand.

The coin was inherited from their late brother by three American sisters, and it turned out that it had been kept in a bank safe for decades. The owners of the coin wished to remain anonymous; it is known that they live in Ohio.

The coin was bought for $18,200 back in 1978 when the women's parents and their now-deceased brother ran a dairy farm. One of the sisters admitted that their brother often talked about the rare coin, but she had never seen it in person until last year.
