Mistakes many drivers make: what mistake with a car can ruin the trip

Alina MilsentNews
Check the engine oil level regularly

Excessive engine oil consumption is a serious problem for a car. In general, the engine consumes 0.2 to 0.5 liters of oil every 1000 km, which varies depending on the age of the car and its use.

Drivers should immediately pay attention to excessive engine oil consumption, especially when preparing for a long trip. The Sante Plus publication has told you what happens if your car runs out of oil and why it is dangerous.

How to check the engine oil level

When the dashboard warning light comes on, it will signal that the engine oil is low. But you should also listen to the engine. Strange, uncharacteristic sounds can also be the first "symptom" of oil problems.

Experts advise not to delay checking the oil level. When topping up, do not exceed the maximum level – otherwise, it can cause damage to the engine.

Ideally, check the engine oil level monthly. If you are on the road, you should stop and wait until the vehicle has cooled down and the oil level has stabilized. Under the hood, locate the sensor and make sure the level is between the two min/max indicators.

Another way to make sure is to check the area where your vehicle is parked. Oil stains can indicate signs of a leak. Sometimes it is necessary to start the car's engine to see if the oil is leaking.

What causes an oil leak

Oil leaks can be caused by several things: damage to the oil seal, oil filter (it must be replaced every year to limit oil leakage), and valve stem (leads to bluish smoke from the exhaust). Overly worn segments can also cause oil leaks. You also need to eliminate the possibility of damage to the casing – sometimes a simple pebble on the road can be enough.

How to reduce engine oil consumption

Experts have made several recommendations:

  1. Choose the right oil, paying attention to the manufacturer's recommendations. This is especially true for the viscosity level.
  2. The air filter should be cleaned regularly.
  3. Check the oil and coolant levels regularly, not when you have already noticed signs of leakage.
