According to research, men have grown twice as much as women over the past century. Data from dozens of countries show that the difference in height and weight between the sexes has increased since 1900.

These trends have created greater differences between the sexes. According to experts, the rapid development of men makes them "more sexual and formidable," writes DailyMail.

The researchers found that improved living conditions, such as proper nutrition, healthcare, and fewer stressful situations, led to men gaining height and weight faster. Since women were not affected by these factors, it suggests that they are less sensitive to environmental influences, experts say.

More than 135,000 people from 62 countries took part in the study titled "The Sexy and Fearsome Male Body". Experts compared the data with an indicator of the national level of human well-being.

Professor Lewis Halsey of the University of Roehampton and his colleagues used data from the World Health Organization and foreign authorities to see how height and weight changed depending on living conditions, The Guardian reports.

It turned out that people living in countries with low human development indices (HDIs) are more likely to suffer from infectious diseases, chronic malnutrition, and a greater overall burden of disease than people living in countries with high HDIs.

An analysis of records from dozens of countries showed that for every 0.2 point increase in the HDI, women were on average 1.7 cm taller and 2.7 kg heavier, while men were 4 cm taller and 6.5 kg heavier. This shows that with improved living conditions, height and weight increase, but twice as fast for men as for women.

"Women may find men's height attractive because it potentially makes them more formidable, and also because being taller suggests they are well-built," said Lewis Halsey.

The findings are based on previous studies that have shown that women want taller men more than men want shorter women. Scientists note that in the animal kingdom, most females, regardless of species, look for the strongest and healthiest partner.

The researchers note that men are on average taller and heavier than women in different countries, which probably reflects "the evolutionary history of physical competition between men for status and control over resources."

But there are also disadvantages to being tall. According to medical data, tall people are more susceptible to various types of cancer, possibly because they have more cells that can accumulate mutations that lead to the disease.
