Yaroslava becomes two-time European champion in high jump

Ukrainian high jumper Yaroslava Maguchikh has won the 2024 European Athletics Championships in Rome. The 22-year-old from Dnipro cleared 2.01m, which was the best result for Ukraine in the history of the continental championships. None of the representatives of our country has ever jumped so high at the Euros.

The 22-year-old from Dnipro started her performance by easily clearing 1.90m, missing the first two marks (1.82, 1.86).

For the second time, Yaroslava came to the sector at 1.95 and took it on the first attempt. This immediately put the Ukrainian in the lead.

Maguchikh's next jump was historic. The Dnipro native cleared 1.97 on her first attempt,

In the fight for gold, Maguchikh competed with Serbian Angelina Topic, who decided to miss 1.99. Jaroslawa cleared this height on the first attempt.

Topic tried to respond with 2.01, but for the first time in her career, the 18-year-old Serbian failed to conquer this level. Maguchikh managed to take 2.01 on the second try, securing a historic victory.

Another Ukrainian jumper, Iryna Gerashchenko, took third place with a score of 1.95.

For the first time in its history, Ukraine has won a double podium at the European Championships in the women's outdoor high jump. In 2022, this achievement was made by Ukrainian women in the 400-meter hurdles (Victoria Tkachuk and Hanna Ryzhykova took silver and bronze, respectively).

After the victory, Rosya and Ira ran to the fans in the stands with Ukrainian flags to share their joy.

As OBOZ.UA previously reported, on March 1, Yaroslava won a silver medal at the 2024 World Indoor Championships, which were hosted by Glasgow, Scotland. Our compatriot became the second in the high jump sector, having managed to take the bar at 1 meter 97 centimeters.

At the 2022 European Athletics Championships in Munich, Maguchikh won gold, becoming the first European high jump champion in the history of Ukraine.

Earlier, Russian Tokyo Olympics champion Maria Lasitskene admitted that she "won't be able to watch" Yaroslava Maguchikh's performance at the Paris Games.
