Landscaping of Kyiv in 1956

Kyiv has always been called a green city. A large number of trees, flowerbeds, and flowers adorned the capital, as can be seen in the 1956 photos.

The archival photos were published in the community "Old Photos of Kyiv" on Facebook. Some famous locations in the capital have changed a lot since then.

"Landscaping in Kyiv in 1956," the post reads.

The published photos show that, in particular, Independence Square and St. Sophia Square looked very different then. The monument to Bohdan Khmelnytsky, for example, still had a large flower bed.

As a reminder, old photographs are perhaps the only way to see what Kyiv was like in the early twentieth century. In 1918, a German photographer took a series of pictures of the city center while in the capital.

As a reminder, Boryspil International Airport received its first flight back in 1959. In 1968, newsreel filmmakers captured two minutes of everyday life at Kyiv's main air gate.

As reported by OBOZ.UA, spring floods have always been a big problem for Kyiv residents, especially those who lived on the islands and near the Dnipro River. In 1929, the founder of modern documentary filmmaking, Ukrainian director Mykhailo Kaufman, used his camera to preserve this interesting moment in the history of the Ukrainian capital.
