In the heart of Germany, there is a small but very picturesque town called Rothenburg. It is believed that this town inspired the Disney classics to create a number of some of their favorite cartoons. In particular, we are talking about Pinocchio and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.

Rothenburg is often called a "living fairy tale" because of its stunning architecture. Almost all the houses here have vases of brightly colored flowers in the windows, and the pretty St. James Church and medieval walls make this town really look like the one described in children's books or shown in cartoons.

Disney production designer Art Riley was tasked with bringing Pinocchio to life on the big screen when he discovered the city. Although the visual influence of Rothenburg is evident in the company's animated adaptation, it was the spirit of the city, the combination of its history, fantasy and nostalgia that struck a chord with Riley. A house in Rothenburg was even used as a model for Geppetto's house in Pinocchio.

The village has its own Museum of Puppets and Marionettes, which houses an impressive collection, and some of the dolls even resemble Pinocchio.

If you come to Rothenburg during the winter holidays, you can enjoy the magical medieval Christmas market known as the Reiterlesmarkt. And you'll be amazed at the striking resemblance it has to the fairy-tale scenes of the classic movie Pinocchio.

Twinkling lights, wooden stalls selling toys and various interesting trinkets, and, of course, the festive spirit turn this city into a fairy tale.

Even those who are not Disney fans will be impressed by the beauty and history of Rothenburg. The old part of the city is surrounded by centuries-old walls and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Here you can also climb the Town Hall tower, which offers a panoramic view, visit the medieval museum of crimes and punishments, or simply wander between the charming streets while tasting local cuisine.

You should definitely try the city's famous pastry, the Schneeballen. It's a ball of deep-fried dough. Be sure to try mulled wine (if you're 18+) made according to a unique recipe with white wine.

There are many small family-run hotels and guesthouses in the city center that offer a cozy and authentic stay. This is very convenient because the city is small and you can visit all its beautiful locations without using transportation.
