We often think of citrus fruits as plants that grow in the distant tropics. But the truth is that lemon can be easily grown on your windowsill, and even harvested.

The experts of floristics.info told how to achieve this. In particular, they tried to grow a tree of the "Kyiv large-fruited" variety. And here are the tips they gave based on the results.

What conditions does a lemon need

A lemon tree likes bright lighting. That is why it is better to choose a southern windowsill for it. Also, tropical fruits need high humidity, and therefore regular spraying will not hurt.

The frequency of watering in winter for lemon is 1-2 times a week. In summer, you need to focus on the weather – in a sunny place and hot weather, the plant's need for water increases significantly. So just check the soil in the pot to the touch and water as soon as it dries.

Features of lemon care

If you are growing a lemon tree at home, keep a close eye on the condition of its leaves. The plant is vulnerable to scale insects, so check it regularly for the appearance of these pests. Experts also recommend periodic preventive spraying of the tree with appropriate preparations. The treatment is recommended once a month.

For your lemon to form many side shoots, you need to pinch its top. As the tree grows, pinch the side branches as well. This will help your plant branch out well.

It is advisable to transplant a lemon by transshipment from a smaller pot to a larger one. Remove the tree along with the clod of soil, being careful not to disturb it so as not to damage the roots. Be sure to put a layer of drainage on the bottom of the pot.

Flowering and fruiting of the lemon

If you want your lemon to bear fruit, you will have to wait quite a long time – about 7-9 years. The plant gains enough strength when it reaches at least 80 cm in height. When the tree reaches a meter in height, you can leave 1-2 fruits on it and increase their number over time. Until then, any ovary that appears on it will need to be removed. A homegrown lemon will spend too much energy on its development.

The flowering season of the plant is March-April. This is when the lemon tree produces fragile white flowers with a wonderful fresh aroma. Lemon fruits take a long time to ripen. Some varieties take up to 9 months. In the winter season, it is worth illuminating the plant with a photo lamp so that it receives enough light.
