Johnny Depp, Angelina Jolie and 5 other actors who don't watch their own movies
Many Hollywood stars, such as Keanu Reeves and Jennifer Aniston, love to watch the movies and TV shows they've starred in. This is how they satisfy their own egos (understandably) and also assess how convincing their characters are on screen.
At the same time, there are also actors who, on the contrary, refuse to watch the result after filming. Why? The reasons are often psychological. Read the OBOZ.UA article to learn more.
1. Jared Leto
American actor and musician Jared Leto, known for his roles in Suicide Squad (2016), Dallas Buyers Club (2013) and Mr. Nobody (2009), said on The Jess Cagle Show that he hasn't watched movies with himself in over 20 years: "If I’m not kind of criticizing myself along the way, even if it’s in a constructive way or directing myself. I feel like I’ve done my best work when I’m just not thinking about the character from that point of view, from the outside in," he admitted. He added that the last movie he watched was Requiem for a Dream (2000). Leto did it only because director Darren Aronofsky forced him to.
2. Megan Fox
American actress and model Megan Fox, star of the films Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen (2009) and Jennifer's Body (2009), admitted in an interview with FOX News that she feels vulnerable when she sees herself on TV or even in photographs: "I never (look at myself), even in still photographs. I don't look at anything. I panic if there is a monitor in the room I immediately go into like an anxiety attack. I'm insecure, I think most actors are pretty insecure," she said.
3. Angelina Jolie
American actress and director Angelina Jolie is another celebrity who doesn't watch the movies she stars in. This includes Lara Croft: Tomb Raider (2001), Mr. & Mrs. Smith (2005), Salt (2010), and The Eternals (2021)... The list of noteworthy films can go on for a long time. What exactly stops her? "I like the process of doing them more than watching them," the star admitted in an interview with Good Morning America. She added that her acting career shifted to fourth place on the list of priorities after she became Brad Pitt's wife (this conversation was held long before the divorce) and a mother of many children, and also became seriously involved in charitable projects: "I try to educate myself and learn about the world and do some good things while I'm alive. So what is that? Fourth? II've been lucky to have a great career and a lot of success but I wake up every day just the luckiest mum and I don't want to miss school lunches and things like that."
4. Tom Hanks
In 2016, in an interview with ABC News, American actor and producer Tom Hanks said that he was very proud of his work, but he did not spend time watching the films he had starred, including Forrest Gump (1994), Philadelphia, (1993), The Exorcist, (2000), etc. According to him, doing so is a "horrible mistake," and he added that "you never learn what to do; you only sort of learn what not to do; the thing about looking at the old movies is that they don’t change."
5. Javier Bardem
Spanish actor Javier Bardem, star of the films Dune (2021), Escobar (2017), and Eat, Pray, Love (2010), doesn't watch movies with himself because he has a lot of complexes. He spoke frankly about this in an interview with GQ: "The fact that I like to make characters doesn’t mean that I like to watch my characters being made, my performance. I can’t even watch that f–king nose, that f–king voice, those ridiculous eyes. I can’t handle that. But when I’m doing it, I don’t see my nose or hear my voice; it’s like there’s something stronger, bigger than that. And I need to express it."
6. Jesse Eisenberg
American actor Jesse Eisenberg, best known for his roles in The Squid and the Whale (2005), Park and Recreation (2009), and The Social Network (2010), is convinced that he cannot watch the films he has starred in because of excessive self-criticism. In a 2016 interview with Business Insider, he said: "You've taken a hundred pictures and you only like two of the pictures and you send them to all of your friends and the rest you're totally mortified by how you look. The side of your face, that Speedo you decided to wear — that's the experience for me. Two percent of a project I feel so comfortable with and proud of, and the rest of it I feel very self-critical of."
7. Johnny Depp
The American actor and film producer Johnny Depp, star of Edward Scissorhands (1990), Pirates of the Caribbean (2003), and Alice Through the Looking Glass (2016), has never seen his own films, as hard as it may be to believe. He explained the reason in an interview with The Independent: "I made a choice a long time ago, that I was better off not watching my films, which is a drag because you miss out on a lot of your friends' incredible work. But I feel like it would just harm me. I would rather stay as ignorant as possible about the result of anything because once you're done playing that character, it's really not your business anymore."
