Jackie Chan returns in a new installment about a karate kid

Columbia Pictures has released the first trailer for the new movie Karate Kid: Legends, which brings the iconic martial arts heroes back to the big screen. The movie centers on two sensei, Mr. Han (Jackie Chan), and Daniel LaRusso (Ralph Macchio).

The film brings together generations of fans of the franchise, including those who grew up watching the original films, and a new audience familiar with the Cobra Kai series. The premiere will take place on May 30, 2025, Deadline reports.

Synopsis

The protagonist of the film is young Li Fong (Ben Wang), a kung fu prodigy who moves from Beijing to New York after a family tragedy. In a foreign city, he has to not only adapt to the new environment but also confront the problems that haunt him. The decisive test is the karate competition, for which the young fighter combines kung fu and karate styles under the guidance of two senshi, Mr. Han and Daniel LaRusso.

Authors

Karate Kid: Legends is directed by Jonathan Entwistle, written by Rob Lieber and produced by Karen Rosenfelt. The film features martial arts stars Jackie Chan and Ralph Macchio, as well as young actors Ben Wang, Joshua Jackson, Sadie Stanley and Ming-Na Wen.

The original 1984 film The Karate Kid, starring Ralph Macchio and Pat Morita, became a cult favorite. It revealed the story of Daniel LaRusso, who, under the guidance of the wise Mr. Miyagi, overcame difficulties and became a karate champion. Subsequently, two sequels appeared, as well as a 2010 remake with Jackie Chan and Jaden Smith, which moved the events to China.

Recently, the franchise has been revived thanks to the popular series Cobra Kai, which was released in 2018 and gathered a wide audience on Netflix.
