A new species of miniature spiders hitherto unknown to science has been discovered in the UK. No records of this species, the "trembling jumping spider" (Anasaetis milesae), have been found anywhere in the world.

But it is related to another species that lives in the Caribbean region, Talker writes. Therefore, there is an assumption that the spiders were accidentally brought to the country along with imported plants.

The spider is only 4 mm long. Along with 500 other species, they were discovered during the annual BioBlitz nature survey last year at the Penryn campus of the University of Exeter, Cornwall.

The experts doubted that this species was a native of Cornwall - so they sent them to Dmitry Logunov, a leading European expert on jumping spiders, at the Manchester Museum.

But he confirmed that this species has been officially identified only in Cornwall, nowhere else in the world.

"I have never seen anything like this before," said one of the scientists.
