The month of September is a busy time for gardeners. It's time to harvest vegetables and put them in storage. So it's worth having a list of all the work at hand so you don't fuss and miss anything.

The publication "Your Agronomist" has compiled just such a list. It will help you prepare for all types of gardening work in September and do it correctly. Then you will definitely ensure the full preservation of your harvest. And you will also sow all the crops that can be grown as winter crops or before the cold weather.

Potatoes

Dry the dug potatoes well and sort them. Put the potatoes that will be used for food in a dark cellar. On the contrary, put the seed potatoes in the light so that they turn green. This will give it more endurance and protect it from diseases and pests. Don't forget to put seeds of different varieties separately.

Onions

In September, it's time to harvest seed onions. Do this when exactly half of the leaves have fallen off - no more. If you are late with the harvest and wait for rains, for example, the seedlings will start to grow, and this will have a bad effect on storage.

After digging, the onions are placed in a garden bed or under a canopy, if the weather is wet, to dry. The leaves of the dried fruit are cut off 3-4 cm above the neck. The bulbs are sorted and all quality ones are sent for storage in a dry, well-ventilated place.

Garlic

You need to dry the dug garlic only under a canopy. It does not tolerate direct sunlight. In such conditions, the cloves acquire an unpleasant pungent taste.

Vegetable crops

Those tomatoes, peppers, eggplants, pumpkins, etc. that continue to ripen in the beds need watering and fertilizing. Stop fertilizing four weeks before the expected cold snap and harvest.

If there are frosts in September, all fruits must be harvested immediately. They are sorted into ripe and green, large and small. Small and unripe fruits should be dipped in salted boiling water for three minutes, then layered and sprinkled with grated garlic. Pour vegetable oil on top of the vegetables processed in this way and press down with oppression. Store at room temperature for 1-2 weeks until fully cooked.

Legumes

Legumes are just ripening in September. Beans, peas, soybeans, etc. are peeled and stored. To avoid infection of the seeds with the borer, you need to keep the crop cool below 10 degrees. Under such conditions, the pest eggs do not hatch.

Cabbage

Pay attention to all types of cabbage - white cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, kohlrabi, Savoy cabbage. Cut off heads ready for harvest in a timely manner. In September, medium- and late-ripening white cabbage gains weight well. It needs to be watered regularly. If you make sudden changes in moisture, it can crack and this will adversely affect its ability to be stored.

Root vegetables

Turnips, rutabagas, radishes, etc. continue to ripen in September. They need to be watered and protected from pests. For the latter, sprinkling ash on the plants is suitable. It should be done early in the morning.

Greens and radishes

Leafy vegetables and radishes produce excellent yields in September. Therefore, you can sow them to have fresh spinach, lettuce, and radishes before the frost. But it is important to protect the crops from nighttime frost.

Preparing organic fertilizers

In September, it's time to prepare organic fertilizers for next year. Mowed or cut plants are dried and placed on a compost heap. Fresh and dry residues should alternate with each other in layers. Adding fresh manure or poultry droppings to the compost is a good tool. This stimulates the rapid growth of microorganisms and worms that process organic matter. The formed pile should be well watered and kept moist at all times. For the winter, it should be covered with hay, straw, or dry leaves. This way, the decay processes will continue in the winter months and it will mature well by the next season.
