Apple's new iPhone 17 "Air", which is scheduled to be released next year, may not meet the expected standard for the thickness of the gadget. The company has encountered technical problems trying to make the device even thinner.

These difficulties, in particular, are related to the new batteries that Apple planned to use for this device. However, due to high production costs, Apple had to make changes to the design, MacRumors reports.

According to the publication, Apple has now abandoned the use of batteries with a thinner substrate, which could help make the device lighter and thinner. The production of such batteries turned out to be too expensive, which was the main obstacle to the realization of the plan. The company is considering alternative solutions, but they may affect the overall design.

The new battery for the iPhone 17 "Air" is expected to be about 6 mm thick, which will automatically increase the thickness of the device itself. This means that the model is likely to be slightly thicker than the thinnest iPhone 6, which was 6.9 mm thick. Thus, the new model will not be able to become the thinnest smartphone in Apple's history.

iPhone 17 Air: what is known

New sleek design

The iPhone 17 Air will have a body made of a mixture of aluminum and titanium. This will not only reduce the thickness, but also preserve the elegance of the device, although detailed specifications are still unknown.

Improved display

The new iPhone is expected to feature a 6.6-inch high-resolution screen with ProMotion and a 120Hz refresh rate. Additionally, the display will be protected by a new coating that will increase scratch resistance and add an anti-reflective effect, which will be a useful addition for users.

One rear camera

Apple has decided to focus on minimalism - the iPhone 17 Air will have only one rear camera. This decision is explained by the company's desire to make the device even thinner. The rear camera is likely to be equipped with a 48-megapixel sensor, and the front camera will have an improved 24-megapixel module, which will ensure high quality images.

Powerful A19 chip

The smartphone will have an A19 chip with 8 GB of RAM, which will allow it to maintain high performance. However, unlike the Pro models, which will have 12 GB of RAM and an A19 Pro chip, the iPhone 17 Air will be positioned as a more compact and affordable device with lower power consumption.

Own 5G modem

The iPhone 17 Air may be one of the first Apple smartphones to feature its own 5G modem. This development will allow the company to reduce its dependence on Qualcomm, as well as provide better communication integration, including support for Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and GPS.

High price at launch

According to sources, the iPhone 17 Air may cost more than the iPhone Pro Max, with a projected starting price of $1,300. Despite the potentially high price, the device could be a worthy alternative given the new approach to design and features.
