When choosing a popular vacation destination, you should also be prepared for the crowds of tourists who also want to see the sights. As the global tourism industry recovers from the pandemic, many cities are facing a flood of visitors who keep arriving throughout the year.

A study conducted by Money Transfers has identified popular cities that are always - regardless of the season and weather - filled with crowds of tourists. The details were reported by Express.

The most crowded cities in the world

  1. Phuket, Thailand
  2. Pattaya, Thailand
  3. Krabi, Thailand
  4. Muğla, Turkey
  5. Hurghada, Egypt
  6. Macau, China
  7. Heraklion, Greece
  8. Venice, Italy
  9. Rhodes, Greece
  10. Miami, USA

The Thai island of Phuket came out on top, with 118.5 tourists per capita. The world's best beaches, including Kata and Karon, are located in Phuket.

In general, Thailand is among the top three leaders in the Money Transfers index, with Pattaya and Krabi accounting for 98.7 and 72.2 tourists per capita, respectively.

The city of Muğla in Turkey is also a popular destination (40.2:1), known for its picturesque nature, historical monuments, and Mediterranean flavor.

Egypt's Hurghada is also on the list with a ratio of 28.2:1.

In Macau (China), there are 27 tourists per local.

Heraklion (22:1) and Rhodes (20.3:1) remain the most popular Greek destinations.

Rome is not included in the ranking. Italy is represented by Venice (21.3:1).

Miami in the United States rounds out the top ten, with almost 19 tourists per local resident.

"The index below highlights just how overcrowded many cities around the world are by international visitors. Although not necessarily an unwelcome thing in many ways, it’s undeniable that this level of popularity and tourists wildly outnumbering locals can result in overcrowding and a cascade of negative effects," said Jonathan Merry, resident travel expert at Money Transfers.

The experts also ranked the least crowded cities.

They include:

  1. Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
  2. Buenos Aires, Argentina
  3. Beijing, China
  4. Kolkata, India
  5. Lima, Peru
  6. Shanghai, China
  7. Cairo, Egypt
  8. Tokyo, Japan
  9. Jakarta, Indonesia
  10. Delhi, India
