iPhone 17 Pro Max will be the best in the series: what will impress

The presentation of the new iPhone 16 will take place on September 9 at Apple Park in Cupertino, California. The main features will be revealed during the event, but certain technical nuances are already known. Moreover, the Chinese Weibo forum recently posted insider information about the iPhone 17 lineup.

Some models in the iPhone 17 line will get 12 GB of RAM. Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo clarified that this applies only to the iPhone 17 Pro Max. This means that the iPhone 17 Pro, the basic iPhone 17, and the new iPhone 17 "Slim" will have 8 GB of RAM. The fourth generation iPhone SE, which is expected in early 2025, is also likely to have 8 GB of RAM.

8 GB is the minimum required for Apple Intelligence features that will appear in iOS 18. Thus, only the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max of the current Apple smartphones will support AI functionality, as the iPhone 15 and 15 Plus have 6 GB of RAM.

Analysts note that the iPhone 17 Pro Max will have a new high-quality cooling system.

A key specification change will also be a 1/2.6-inch 48-megapixel CIS sensor, instead of the 1/3.1-inch 12-megapixel sensor expected to be used in this year's iPhone 16 Pro models.

The new iPhones will have Tetraprism telephoto lenses. This means that the smartphones will have at least 5x optical zoom and 25x digital zoom. Kuo emphasized that he is not sure if only the iPhone 17 Pro Max will have the updated Tetraprism camera. Tetraprism requires completely new prisms, which must have a shorter form factor to reduce the height of the camera, Kuo added.

The analyst's report confirms a statement made last year by Jeff Pu of Haitong International Securities. In December, Pu said that the updated 48-megapixel telephoto lens of the iPhone 17 Pro Max would be optimized for use with Apple Vision Pro. The current iPhone 15 Pro models can record spatial video with 3D depth for playback on the Vision Pro – when held in landscape orientation, the main and ultra-wide lenses combine to record spatial video with additional depth.

The iPhone 17 Pro Max is likely to be the first iPhone model to have a rear camera system consisting entirely of 48-megapixel lenses.

Looking to the future, Kuo added that the iPhone 2027 will have an even more advanced Tetraprism camera with better optical zoom.
