Apple claims that it is constantly working to improve the strength and durability of its smartphones. However, even true iPhone fans claim that it is still far from perfect in this regard.

So enthusiasts around the world decided to test the second-generation Ceramic Shield, which was used in the iPhone 16 line. Of course, the authors of the Allstate Protection Plans YouTube channel, which conducts such tests on behalf of the electronics technical service provider and insurance company, also made an attempt.

The channel's authors focused on the 6.9-inch iPhone 16 Pro Max, Apple's largest smartphone to date. Its front and back are traditionally made of glass. However, this glass has a special composition called Ceramic Shield. According to the manufacturer, the material with a ceramic component is four times stronger than ordinary tempered glass and twice as strong as the best smartphone materials on the market today.

To test the durability of Ceramic Shield, Allstate Protection Plans dropped the new iPhone 16 Pro Max from a height of 1.8 meters onto a concrete surface. The gadget will survive about the same drop if dropped by a tall man who is looking at the screen.

First, the iPhone 16 Pro Max was dropped face down. And it did not survive the collision with the sidewalk. The display cracked into small fragments and stopped working. It became impossible to use the smartphone after such a fall.

After that, the gadget was dropped with the back cover on. The glass panel again failed to withstand the impact, and the camera body was also significantly damaged. This time, however, the iPhone remained in full working order.

Thus, the experts confirmed that the iPhone 16 still cannot boast of high impact resistance. And it's worth buying a protective case and AppleCare+ insurance where this option is available.
