The International Olympic Committee stated that the main difference between sanctions against Russia and Belarus and the situation in the Gaza Strip is that Russia attacked Ukraine during the Olympics. It is the violation of the Olympic truce that is the main reason for the Russians' suspension.

"The measures taken and the IOC's recommendations are the result of the outbreak of war by the Russian army during the Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games in Beijing 2022.
