Silk has always been associated with luxury, elegance and sophistication. It is often used to make expensive clothes, bedding, etc.

Silk fabrics are not only beautiful, thin and light but also very delicate. The Martha Stewart magazine told us how to wash them so as not to spoil them.

Unfortunately, dyed silk fades on contact with water, so check your clothes for color fastness before washing. Blot the inconspicuous inner area with a damp, clean cloth. If the color spreads, it is better to take the item to a professional dry cleaner.

How to wash silk at home

If you are sure that the color of your silk garment will not fade, then it can be washed at home. First, you need to prepare a cleaning solution.

Mix 2 cups of warm water with 2 tablespoons of lemon juice or white vinegar. Then pour the mixture into a spray bottle and spray it on the stained areas on the silk fabric. Gently rub the liquid into the stains with a soft cloth. This will help remove even deodorant stains.

Then you need to wash your clothes. You can send them to the washing machine for a delicate wash, but experts say it's better to do it by hand.

Fill the sink with cool or cold water, and then add a mild detergent that does not contain aggressive ingredients. Put things in the solution, mix, and let them sit for a few minutes. Finally, drain the soap mixture and rinse the silk with cool running water.

Drying

Never wring out your silk items or throw them in the tumble dryer. To remove excess water, place the wet garment on a white cotton towel. Fold it in half and gently blot the silk. Then hang the garment on a hanger to dry naturally.

Caring

If you want to straighten silk fabric, it is better to use a steamer designed for delicate fabrics. However, if you only have an iron, turn the garment inside out, make it damp, and iron it on the lowest temperature.

Silk clothes should be stored on fluffy hangers to prevent them from slipping. Also, remember that moths are very fond of natural fabrics, so clean your closet regularly and check it for pests.
