No matter what kind of makeup you choose, mascara on your eyelashes will add expressiveness to your look. You should know how to properly remove makeup residue from your face. Makeup removal is a mandatory daily procedure. Neither makeup artists nor dermatologists recommend going to bed with makeup on – this way you not only spoil your skin by clogging pores but also cause great harm to your eyes.

Mascara makes eyelashes heavy and stiff from the weight of makeup. In addition, bacteria and makeup residue can get into the eyes, irritating. Experts tell you how to remove mascara safely.

Method 1

Try makeup remover wipes. Look for brands that are alcohol-free or designed for sensitive skin, as sometimes wipes can cause irritation. Gently press and gently move the wipe back and forth until all mascara is removed.

Method 2

Micellar water is often used to remove makeup, but it is also an effective tool when it comes to eyelashes. Apply micellar water to a cotton pad and gently wipe your eyes in a circular motion.

Eye makeup remover is also effective and works directly on mascara. These solutions usually contain oils that help dissolve mascara, unlike water-based products that repel them.

Method 3

Similar to eye makeup remover, cleansing balms contain oils that help remove mascara from the lashes. To remove most of the mascara, apply the product to a sponge and leave it on your eyes for a few minutes before wiping it off.

Method 4

If you have sensitive skin, it's better to choose a more oily makeup texture. For example, milk has a mild effect, so the risk of irritation is minimal. Make sure that it does not contain alcohol (in particular, ethanol and isopropyl).

If you have problems with rosacea or eczema, choose a hypoallergenic, fragrance-free product with a creamy texture.

If you don't want to spend a lot of money on makeup remover, you can replace balms and oils with baby shampoo, experts say. To reduce any possible irritation, use formulas and brands that are tear-free, chemical-free, and fragrance-free.

For waterproof makeup, a two-phase product is usually used: oil dissolves mascara, and lotion "attracts" dirt.

Basic tips for eye makeup

  • Hydrophilic oil should be applied to dry skin.
  • Any product should be applied to a cotton pad and held on the eyelids for a while, and only then clean the area.
  • Do not rub the skin around the eyes. If the cosmetics are difficult to dissolve, it is probably waterproof, so you should choose the appropriate formula.
  • It is better to wash off all eye makeup removers with water.
