A pair of sharp scissors is needed everywhere in the house - from the kitchen to the bedroom. But what should you do if your scissors are dull and don't work as they should?

Experts say that you shouldn't rush to throw away the scissors, but rather try to sharpen them yourself. The House Digest publication told us about a rather unexpected but effective method.

To do this, you will need a drill bit from a drill or a perforator. It's made of a hard enough material to pierce the scissor blade. To use the drill bit, place it between the blades of the tool and run it through several times. In just a couple of minutes, you will have sharp and ready-to-use scissors again. This way, you can maintain their condition whenever you feel that they have started to become dull.

However, this method has its limitations. It only works with scissors that have straight blades. If they have a curved edge, then you'll have to have the tool sharpened professionally.

Also, don't try to sharpen the scissors on a drill bit that you are actively using. The process can damage it slightly and reduce its efficiency.

Technically, the process looks like this: place the drill bit between the scissors blades at the very bottom near the screw. Press the scissors against the drill bit by pulling it up. Repeat this motion until you are satisfied with the sharpness of your scissors. From time to time, test the tool by cutting a piece of paper. Once you are satisfied with its performance, stop. Finally, use a rag to pick up any shavings that have come off the scissor blades.

If you plan to sharpen a pair of scissors that are quite old, they may have some rust on them. If this is the case, you can use WD-40 to clean the blades. First, wipe the cutting edge clean of dirt and dust. Then spray the product on all the rust spots on the scissors and leave it on for 10 minutes. Finally, remove the rust with sandpaper or a stiff sponge. Vinegar will help clean and polish the blades after treatment.
