How to save houseplants from the heat while you're on vacation: life hacks

The summer of 2024 was abnormally hot and, according to weather forecasters, the heat will continue to make itself felt. It's not always possible to water the beds regularly, but it's important to take care of the plants even during the holiday season.

Taking care of your garden is time-consuming and effortful. Gardening expert Joshua Houston has revealed the most effective ways to ensure that your plants are watered while you're away.

Method 1

• Take a plastic bottle and make small holes all over the bottom third.
• Then dig a small hole near the roots of the plant to place the bottle.
• Fill the bottle and place it in the dug hole before securing it with soil.
• The water will be released slowly, giving the plants moisture for several days. This is also a great way to reuse plastic bottles.

Method 2

• For indoor plants, the expert advises using a bathtub.
• Fill the tub with about 1-2 cm of water before placing the plants in it.
• Make sure the plant pots have holes in the bottom so that the water can reach the roots. If the bathroom does not get sunlight, the kitchen sink may be a better option.
• You can also place the plants on a towel to avoid damaging the surfaces.

Method 3

If you live in a private home, move some plants outside. This may seem obvious, but you'd be surprised at the number of people who forget that they can move potted plants outside in a hurry.

Method 4

• An automatic watering kit allows you to run drippers and pipes around your garden to distribute water.
• This can be done by leaving the tap slightly open or setting a timer that releases water from time to time.
• This is the best and most effective way to ensure that your plants are watered while you are away.
