How to reduce fuel consumption: effective tips for drivers
There may be many reasons for fuel savings. That's why OBOZREVATEL has collected some tips on how to reduce fuel consumption while using a car. The indicators that you can use to evaluate the performance of your car can be found in technical documentation.
It should be borne in mind that the car may actually have a higher consumption than indicated because it is tested in the optimal mode in terms of efficiency. Therefore, there is no need to raise the alarm because of a couple of liters per hundred kilometers. But a to-do list sounds nice.
Avoid aggressive driving
Abrupt acceleration and braking, jerking while driving, and other extreme driving techniques look impressive, but they significantly increase fuel consumption. Gain speed smoothly and drive evenly and you will bring your car's "appetite" closer to the right indicators.
Do not brake until you come to a complete stop
Suppose a red light turns on in front of you and you need to stop. But if you slow down completely, it will be harder to move the car again than to accelerate on the move. Therefore, if your goal is to save money, try to stay in motion until the very end.
Choose quality fuel
Don't skimp on buying quality fuel. Buy the brand recommended by the manufacturer. If you buy cheaper gasoline, the fuel mixture will be lean and the on-board computer will increase its consumption. So, in fact, you will increase your expenses rather than save money. Also, do not abuse additives that reduce fuel consumption - they accelerate engine wear.
Choose an automatic transmission
An automatic transmission with a dual-clutch will be much more efficient on the road than a manual. What's more, modern transmission systems are adaptive and can be adjusted to the most fuel-efficient driving style.
Change spark plugs and filters on time
Experts recommend changing the air filter every 10-15 thousand kilometers, and the fuel filter every 20-25 thousand. The average service life of spark plugs is 15 thousand kilometers. But they can last longer - just inspect them every month and check for serviceability. The more clearly they deliver a spark, the less fuel the engine consumes. And don't forget - the most economical are the "native" spare parts. Therefore, if possible, give preference to branded components.
Forget about large wheels
Although large wheels look aesthetically pleasing, they weigh more. Therefore, driving on such wheels will require more power from the engine and, accordingly, more fuel consumption.
Do not change the aerodynamics of the car
Automakers calculate fuel consumption based on the standard configuration of the car. Any changes increase its air resistance and, consequently, its appetite. So, it's best not to open windows unnecessarily, hang the trunk up, or make any changes to the car's silhouette.
The only reason to open a window
The only really good reason to change the car's aerodynamics and open a window is hot weather as the air conditioner will require even more fuel consumption. Moreover, at low speeds, such a change in aerodynamics will be insignificant.
Take care of the electrical system and sensors
If your battery is noticeably worn, it holds a charge less well and charges more slowly. Meanwhile, the car's electronics detect a low charge and increase the fuel supply to the engine to speed up the alternator. It will do the same if you have several energy-intensive devices connected to your car's power supply, such as headlights, air conditioning, music system, gadget chargers, heated seats and steering wheel, etc. If possible, leave only what you really need. And be sure to check the sensors of the car's electrical system every 3-4 months. Faulty sensors can cause the car to increase fuel consumption by up to 25%.
