Basements are an important part of the home that is used to store various things such as canned goods, tools, old furniture, etc. However, they often have high humidity and insufficient ventilation, which leads to a musty odor.

The stench can quickly spread throughout the house. To prevent this from happening, House Digest has shared a life hack to help you deal with this problem.

Since basements are located underground, they often lack good ventilation. Given that they are also prone to flooding and moisture accumulation, this can be a real problem.

Even if your basement has never been flooded or you have recently renovated it, you may still encounter a musty odor. You shouldn't try to deal with it with air fresheners as they mask the stench rather than eliminate it. Instead, use simple and effective life hacks.

How to get rid of a musty odor

Experts have found that baking soda and vinegar are the best remedies for stench when used properly. However, before you use them, make sure your basement is not infested with mold as it will make your attempts to deodorize the room useless.

Baking soda and vinegar are natural absorbents that have the ability to eliminate odors. However, you should not use them at the same time, otherwise they will simply neutralize each other.

Thus, to get rid of the stench as much as possible, you need to sprinkle baking soda on the floor and leave it for at least 24 hours. During this time, it will absorb all odors.

After that, remove the baking soda with a vacuum cleaner or broom and spray vinegar diluted with water around the area. The acid will completely neutralize the bacteria that cause the unpleasant odor.

If eco-friendly ways to get rid of the stench don't work for you, you should visit a hardware store and buy a commercial odor neutralizing chemical.
