Carpet brings warmth and comfort to the interior. But it can become a real breeding ground for bacteria, dirt, and even mold if not cleaned regularly. Natural wool fibers can absorb a lot of water, so the carpet can easily deform or lose color.

Without proper care, the carpet loses its characteristic texture and softness and becomes less comfortable and aesthetically pleasing. However, wool is sensitive to some aggressive cleaning agents. Experts tell us how to clean a dirty carpet without harming the fibers.

How to clean a carpet

Step 1

Vacuum the carpet at least twice a week to remove dust and debris. It is recommended to vacuum in the direction of the fibers to preserve their quality.

Step 2

If the stains are recent and come from dirt or liquid, blot the affected area with a damp cloth to remove excess dirt. Then apply a neutral detergent with another damp cloth to clean the stain. Avoid intense friction as this can cause discoloration of the wool.

Step 3

In a container, mix 100 g of baking soda and 100 g of salt, then sprinkle the mixture over the stains. Leave it on for an hour and then vacuum the area.

In case of stubborn stains, dilute 100 ml of ammonia in a liter of warm water, add a little neutral detergent, then apply to the affected area. Use a soft brush to scrub the surface thoroughly.

Step 4

If there are no old stains on the carpet, you can wash it by targeting only the stained area. If the carpet contains silk fibers, it is not recommended to wet them, as this will cause irreversible damage.

Step 5

After the washing is complete, let the carpet air dry before putting it back in place.

Wool carpets are known to be stain-resistant and have antibacterial properties, but they do not avoid dirt during daily use. The frequency of their cleaning depends on their location and use.

Keeping your carpet clean is not easy. It is worth following a few precautions and simple cleaning tips to keep your carpet looking good and lasting longer:

  • Do not walk on the carpet in dirty shoes.
  • The carpet should be vacuumed regularly, especially if it is in a high-traffic area or if you have pets.
  • Remove grease or dirt stains quickly as soon as they appear to prevent them from penetrating the carpet fibers. White vinegar will help clean the surface and eliminate odors at the same time.

Common mistakes when cleaning wool carpets

The following mistakes should be avoided when cleaning carpets:

  • Use of aggressive cleaning agents – chemicals can damage the fibers.
  • Lack of cleaning can lead to dirt accumulation – you should vacuum the surface regularly and deep clean at least once a year.
  • On the other hand, frequent cleaning can be harmful, as it increases the risk of damage to the wool fibers.
  • Wool can absorb moisture and liquid, which can contribute to the spread of mold.
