Orchids are one of the most beautiful and yet most demanding indoor plants. Their bright, exotic flowers can become a real decoration of any interior.

However, in order for orchids to delight their owners with long and lush flowering, you need to know how to properly care for them. That's why Agromarket told us how to help them in dry and hot summer weather.

Orchids need special care in summer, as heat and dry weather can affect their condition. One of the main aspects of caring for orchids during this period is the correct watering regime, as insufficient moisture can lead to the death of the plant or the appearance of diseases.

Lighting and other conditions

Orchids need regular ventilation and bright, diffused light. Stagnant air can lead to the development of fungal infections, and direct sunlight can cause burns on the leaves, so it is better to place the plant on east or west windows. You can also put the flower deep into the room, but in a bright place.

If you do place the orchid near the windows, do not open them if there is a roadway nearby. Otherwise, the flower will be exposed to a large amount of dust, which will absorb liquid. In other words, the more dust there is in the air, the drier it is, and orchids need sufficient humidity.

Also keep in mind that different orchid species and varieties may require different conditions. Therefore, research your particular flower before adjusting them.

How to water an orchid in summer

One of the key aspects of caring for orchids in the summer is the correct watering regimen. In summer, the moisturizing procedure is carried out on average 2-4 times a week. However, the frequency of watering may vary depending on the temperature, humidity, etc.

You can tell if it's time to water the orchid by the presence of condensation droplets in the pot. As long as they abundantly cover the walls of the pot, there is enough moisture. You can also dip a strip of paper into the substrate. With sufficient moisture, its edge protruding above the substrate is saturated with water in about a minute.

There are several ways to water orchids. The most common is to immerse the plant pot in water for 30-40 minutes so that the substrate and roots are well saturated with moisture. After that, you need to let the water drain. In addition, it is worth spraying the flower abundantly with water from a spray bottle. In this way, you will not only improve the humidity of the orchid, but also wash away dust and other contaminants.
