How NASA is going to evacuate astronauts from the ISS: a rough plan has been posted online

The British media published a tentative plan by NASA to urgently evacuate astronauts from the International Space Station due to cracks in the Russian Zvezda module and an oxygen leak. It includes four steps that each crew member will have to follow.

The moment Houston sounds the alarm about the threat, the astronauts will have to hurry to close the hatch of the leaking section. And quickly head for the "lifeboats" docked to the ship, writes MailOnline.

Evacuation rules:

1. Go to the modules located in the American part of the ISS;
2. Evacuate to the designated capsules;
3. Put on emergency suits in the capsules;
4. Turn on the capsule and leave the ISS.

According to the released evacuation plan, each crew will escape in their assigned NASA spacecraft, including the SpaceX Dragon capsule and the Russian Soyuz. NASA Commercial Crew Program Manager Steve Stich said that in the event of an emergency, SpaceX's Dragon could be activated within minutes.

However, it is currently known that not all astronauts will be able to use this plan. The American astronauts who arrived at the ISS on the SpaceX capsule are ready to escape on their ship if necessary. But the evacuation of Don Pettit, a NASA astronaut who flew to the ISS in September on a Roscosmos Soyuz MS-26 with two Russian astronauts, is a bit more complicated. In the event of an emergency, he will not return to Earth on the Soyuz. As NASA spokesman Jimmy Russell explained, he will have to squeeze inside the SpaceX capsule, which has recently been equipped with an extra seat in case Pettit needs it.

As a reminder, the main leak was detected in the service module transmission tunnel in the Russian Zvezda module, which provides the station's living quarters, life support systems, power distribution and data processing, flight control, and propulsion systems.
