Over the decades, Honda has gained a reputation as a reliable brand with an ideal price-performance ratio. However, the brand's fans are facing an unpleasant situation. The auto giant has recalled nearly 1.7 million vehicles due to a faulty steering rack that could lead to steering difficulties.

The exact causes of the massive malfunction have not yet been established. Motor1 experts explained why Honda had to recall the models.

According to the NHTSA recall website, the problem is with the steering gearbox assembly. The assembly may have been manufactured incorrectly, causing excessive internal friction between the parts. This, in turn, caused steering difficulties.

A total of 1,693,199 Honda and Acura vehicles are affected. Here is the full list of vehicles that need to be recalled:

According to Automotive News, Honda has analyzed that only about 1% of the recalled vehicles, or about 17,000 vehicles in total, have a steering problem. Nevertheless, the company plans to replace the worm spring inside the steering gearbox with a new part and add a lubricant to reduce friction.

A sign of the problem is an instantaneous "sticky" feeling when turning the steering wheel. Owners who have already experienced the problem and paid for the repair of their vehicles are entitled to a refund.

Honda received its first complaint about the issue back in September 2021. Since then, it has received a whopping 10,328 warranty claims. The NHTSA has received 13 reports of crashes related to the steering malfunction, including 11 drivers who said they were unable to regain control in time before running off the road. Fortunately, no injuries or deaths have been reported in connection with this problem.
