Honda and GM's cheap electric cars won't be coming: joint development canceled

Honda and GM have abandoned the idea of jointly developing low-cost electric vehicles. They decided to work on further designs separately. Although until recently, the cooperation seemed fruitful.

InsideEVs learned about the changes. A few years ago, General Motors and Honda announced a partnership. The result was supposed to be a line of new electric vehicles, including low-cost models.

They have decided to wind down this cooperation for unspecified reasons. Only the Honda Prologue and Acura ZDX have been produced on the GM Ultium platform so far, as far as models for the Japanese company are concerned. In the future, General Motors will only produce EVs for its own brands.

The next  generation Chevrolet Bolt is a low-cost electric car with a lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) battery as part of the new Ultium architecture. It is thanks to this that the development of the car will be accelerated. For this reason, it will be possible to reduce the cost of the battery, as well as the entire car.

The timing of the Chevrolet Bolt 3 generation has not yet been announced. It is only known that thanks to the new batteries, the car will appear two years earlier than originally planned.
