Help people and wear red: 100-year-old nurse who retired at 85 reveals the secret to longevity
Ruby Cole, a centenarian nurse from Detroit, has shared what she believes is the key to longevity and happiness. This month she will celebrate her 101st birthday.
This was reported by the Daily Mail. The woman claims to be "in love with her life."
Born in Birmingham, Alabama, in 1922, Ruby moved to the Motor City as a young woman, where she went to school for business and nursing. She started working as a nurse at the age of 21 and retired only 64 years later, at the age of 85, without ever taking a sick day.
Among her top tips, Ruby emphasized that always maintaining a "positive outlook" is a great way to stay "happy." The outspoken optimist also sees her goal in life as helping others. "You have to be kind, loving, and helpful," said Ruby, who specializes in pediatrics. "It works both ways because you feel good when you help other people feel good.
That approach has undoubtedly contributed to Ruby's mental and physical health over the years - considering the retired nurse never took a single day of sick leave in more than six decades of work, according to her niece, Paula Martin. "Ms. Ruby didn't want to let people down," she said. "One thing she told us was that giving back makes you happy...and happiness is the key to a life well lived.
As for other issues that are important to longevity, Ruby believes that nutrition and exercise are essential. She emphasized that she has been eating three meals a day for as long as she can remember. "Eating right means you can't skip meals," she explained.
When it comes to exercise, instead of using "fancy" machines in the gym, she has always opted for long walks outside.
In addition to all this, she prefers to look presentable, following the proverbial saying "when you look good, you feel good." Ruby has always favored wearing bright colors, especially red.
