A washing machine is one of the main appliances in our home. However, during washing, it can experience limescale buildup and mold growth inside the mechanism. As a result, you will get reduced efficiency of the appliance and an unpleasant odor from the drum.

To avoid this, you need to clean the washing machine regularly. But it must also be done correctly. OBOZ.UA tells you how to take care of the appliance so that it serves you as long as possible and is always in good condition.

How to clean the washing machine

Start by opening the door and checking for signs of visible debris inside the machine, such as hair, solid particles, wool, lint, etc. Remove it with a damp cloth and look under the rubber gasket. If you see a blockage there, remove it.

Mix equal parts white vinegar and water in a spray bottle. Spray the gasket and the inside of the washing machine with this mixture and wipe them with a dry cloth. If necessary, scrub the most soiled areas with a soft brush.

Now you can move on to the washing machine care product. Use it according to the instructions. Alternatively, you can add 2 cups of vinegar to the drum and run a hot water cycle.

If you notice mold in your washing machine, you will need bleach to get rid of it. Scrub the problem area with an old toothbrush dipped in a 10 percent chlorine bleach solution. But before you start cleaning, make sure to completely wash off all traces of vinegar - these substances should not come into contact with each other.

How often should the machine be cleaned

Preventive maintenance should be carried out at least once a month or after 30 wash cycles. For your convenience, make a schedule to keep track of how many times you have used the washer and when it is time to clean.

Also, don't delay maintenance if you start to smell an unpleasant odor from the machine. Or if dirt has started to accumulate in the appliance and you notice it on the freshly washed clothes. The efficiency of the mechanism depends on the cleanliness of the mechanism and this should be taken into account.

How to keep your washing machine clean

To ensure that the appliance always remains in good condition, experts advise following a few rules for its operation. They will help reduce the number of cleanings.

Keep the interior surfaces dry. Wipe down the drum, and powder tray, and seal them after each use. This will help prevent mold growth.

Leave the door ajar. This will ensure free air circulation inside the mechanism and help to dry the appliance completely.

Clean the filter and dispenser. Regular cleaning of the filter and detergent dispenser helps prevent soap residue build-up and unpleasant odors.

Follow the powder dosage instructions. Using an excessive amount of powder or gel leads to the accumulation of soap residue, which causes an unpleasant odor.
