The match opened the 17th European Championship

The opening match of the 2024 UEFA European Football Championship between Germany and Scotland featured a red card, an own goal and a penalty kick. This was the first opening game in the history of continental championships with such events, OptaJoe writes.

In the 44th minute, the Scots had Watford defender Ryan Porteous sent off, in the 45th minute Kai Havertz converted an 11-meter penalty, and in the 87th minute Real Madrid's German player Antonio Rüdiger scored in the net.

Julian Nagelsmann's team won with a score of 5:1. In addition to Havertz, Florian Wirtz (10'), Jamal Musiala (19'), Niklas Fülkrug (68') and Emre Can (90') scored for the Germans.

On June 19, the Bundestim will play Hungary in the 2nd round, and Scotland will meet Switzerland on the same day.

As OBOZ.UA reported, the 5-1 score was first recorded in the matches of the final stage of the continental championship. There were defeats of 5:0, 5:2 and even 6:1 at the championships, and in the opening match of Euro 1960, the Yugoslavian national team beat France with an incredible 5:4.
