Parsley is one of those garden plants that can be sown for the winter to get an early harvest next year. The seeds of this herb overwinter well in the ground if the weather is more or less seasonal.
But to prevent parsley from freezing and sprouting in spring, you need to sow it correctly. OBOZ.UA asked gardeners about their life hacks.
When to sow parsley in the fall
If you plant the plant in your garden in time, you will get the harvest 2-4 weeks earlier. In addition, you will be able to sow herbs during the next season and always have young parsley leaves.
When sowing parsley for the winter, you need to be guided by the weather. If it is too warm, it will sprout and lose its winter hardiness. If you plant it too late, it will not have time to take root.
The best time to plant parsley is when light night frosts begin - down to -2-3°C. This weather usually occurs in the second half of October and lasts until mid-November.
How to sow parsley for the winter
To spend less effort on preparing a bed for parsley, sow it in the place where onions, potatoes, tomatoes, or cabbage grew in summer. They enrich the soil with substances necessary for the growth of parsley. But you can also add humus.
Also, choose an area where there is a lot of snow in winter. But it shouldn't be a buried area, as parsley will lack sunlight and too much water will accumulate in the spring.
To plant parsley, dig small grooves in the ground about 3 cm deep. You will need to sow double the amount of seeds in them, as not all of them will survive the winter. Simply double the amount recommended on the seed packet. You don't need to soak the seeds before planting, as there's no point in accelerating their germination in the fall. When everything is ready, fill the grooves with a mixture of soil, sand, and peat. And do not cover it with mulch - this will also make the plant germinate at the wrong time.
