Lou Jeanmonneau won the gold medal

The women's sprint at the first stage of the Biathlon World Cup, which is taking place these days in Östersund, Sweden, ended with a sensation. The winner of the race was Lou Jeanmonneau, for whom this "gold" was the first in her career in individual competitions.

The 25-year-old athlete demonstrated perfect shooting and speed over the course and came in first. She was 8.5 seconds ahead of Norway's Carolyn Knotten and 17.5 seconds ahead of her compatriot Juni Jarnekleiv, who won her first career podium.

One of the leaders in the overall standings this season, Franziska Proyss, finished only fourth. Her direct competitor, Italian Lisa Vitozzi, finished the race in ninth place.

The Ukrainian national team failed to please its fans again. None of our athletes managed to get into the point zone, and only two of them - Anastasia Merkushyna and Khrystyna Dmytrenko - managed to qualify for the pursuit, taking 48th and 49th place respectively.

As OBOZ.UA reported, the day before, the Ukrainian men's biathlon team failed in the relay race at the World Cup. After the race, coach Yurai Sinatra named the main culprit in the failure.
