A volcanic eruption took place in Iceland. And just as the hot lava began to flow out of the crater, the northern lights appeared above it.

Incredible footage of the coincidence of two of the most powerful and spectacular natural phenomena in the world was captured by eyewitnesses. And all this extravaganza took place against the backdrop of the night sky, further enhancing the exceptional power and beauty of nature, TheSun writes.

It is known that there are about 130 volcanic mountains in Iceland, many of which are considered inactive. However, many of them still remind us of ourselves from time to time.

This time, the eruption occurred in an area located on the Eurasian and North American tectonic plates. According to experts, earthquakes caused a large crack in the rock in this area. Therefore, this area is particularly active - this is the sixth eruption since December 2023.

The northern lights are also a common phenomenon in Iceland. However, these two forces of nature have never been recorded together. In the slow-motion video, you can see in full glory the amazing and at the same time dangerous dance of clouds, fire and ash that meet the shimmering green northern lights in the sky.

The video, shared by eyewitness Marco Di, shows huge streams of fire pouring down to the ground like a waterfall. Rivers of molten magma were making their way down the mountainside. And above this dangerous stream, the northern lights are playing with colorful colors.

"It was incredibly strange. I don't think we'll ever see it again," said Xana Denruiter, one of the witnesses of the double natural wonder.

But this beauty is still dangerous. The area north of Grindavik was evacuated after the eruption began, and local authorities declared a state of emergency in the region around the volcano, despite the fact that much of the area has resembled a ghost town since late 2023.

Almost a year ago, thousands of Grindavik residents were evacuated due to the danger of seismic activity and lava flows around the Sundnukur volcano.
